Frank Gill – Bird Species Taxonomy: Then and Now

Major changes in world bird taxonomy are underway, driven by advances in speciation concepts and practices. World bird lists are challenged to keep up with the surge in the number of species recognized, together with their nomenclature and phylogeny. Birders are challenged to keep up with the lumps, splits, name changes, and sequences. This talk will peek at the current revolution and revisit some case studies with new perspectives.

Frank Gill, PhD, Curator Emeritus, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Philadelphia, is the author of the acclaimed textbook, Ornithology (W.H. Freeman) and over 150 scientific and popular articles. He is a past President of the American Ornithologist’s Union and recipient in 1998 of their highest award, the William Brewster Medal, for his outstanding contributions to ornithology. Following 25 years at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, Frank served as National Audubon Society’s Chief Scientist, Interim President, and CEO. His innovative program leadership continues with a personal commitment to engage the public in ornithology through citizen science. Exploration of remote corners of the globe remains one of his favorite passions.
