While a graduate student in zoology at the University of Oklahoma, was introduced to ornithology by George Miksch Sutton. Inspired by his descriptions of birding in Iceland, spent an "Iceland Summer" on a solo expedition following the itinerary described in his book with that title. "When I met the great skuas, I was prepared to dodge their attacks by following the advice in the book. Though you might say that the skua was successful in hunting me that day, I have been hunting birds ever since."
